Walking the Cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade Headlands, February 27, 2023

 As it was overcast with sunny periods today we decided to go on a bit of a walk along the cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headlands which are said to be one of the finest natural features of the Algarve.  We drove to the end of Beach Road and parked in front of a lighthouse and started our walk which would take us to Praia de Porto de Mos, a small beach town 2.6km away.  It was mostly cloudy and blustery but the sun came out occasionally and the scenery was stunning.  It was a totally fun day out.

Looking back towards Lagos at the stunningly beautiful coastline and some of the amazing coastal sea pillar formations. 

The Grotto at Ponta da Piedade with its 182 stone steps taking you from the cliff top to the ocean below. On the right is the natural "Cathedral" stone arch that allows small boats to enter into the grotto.

The Lighthouse is situated at the tip of the headlands and was erected in 1913.  It is still in operation and flashes its beacon of light every 7 seconds.

The rugged limestone coastline with its 119 meter cliffs as we headed out on the footpath towards Praia de Porto de Mos that is hidden in the far distance.  

We reached Praia de Porto de Mos and the sun came out so we continued on the coastal footpath until we came upon this breathtaking lookout of its beach below.

Looking the other way from the same lookout.  The footpath would eventually take us to the resort town of Luz.   


But we will leave that walk for another day as it was time to head back to the lighthouse which is located where the land ends in this picture.  This is truly a stunningly beautiful coastline that has to be seen to be believed. A remarkable day.

 Yesterday we took it easy and lazed around the apartment doing laundry, reading and caught up with emails before getting out in the afternoon and headed down to the waterfront to soak up the sun and people watch.  It was a very relaxing day.  Today we are heading out to Aveiro, which we read about in our travel book and it sounded like an interesting place to visit.  It's 76km south of Porto so it was a short drive to get there.  Aveiro is a popular tourist destination famed for its canals, art nouveau architecture and colorfully painted moliceiros boats.  The city lies at the edge of the Ria de Aveiro, a saltwater lagoon that was historically famed for its seaweed, salt and bountiful fish.  We toured the town for several hours and thoroughly enjoyed the experience as there was a huge flea market going on in the center of old town.  We had to get back to Porto as we had a reservation at Mind the Glass, a bistro specializing in Portuguese hot pots...

Arrived in Lagos, February 22, 2023

It was a long but uneventful trip from Vancouver to Frankfurt on Lufthansa's budget carrier, Euro Wings, to meet up with Rita who was in Germany to spend time with her mom in Kassel.  We overnighted at an airport hotel before an early departure to Lisbon where we picked up our rental car and made the 3hour drive to Lagos.  We booked a place in the old part of Lagos which is filled with very narrow, one way roads and homes piled on top on one another.  Our GPS told us we had reached our destination but we were in the middle of an intersection.  Managed to find a parking spot and called the landlady who helped us walk the 100 meters or so to the house.  After getting the familiarizing tour we retrieved our luggage, unpacked, showered, changed and headed into town for an early dinner at Don Sebastiao seafood restaurant. Geoff and Rita's Return to Portugal

Its been 2 years, 11months and 25 days since Rita and I made a hasty and early departure from our Portugal vacation due to the Corona Virus Pandemic.  We had tried to go back to finish our tour of Portugal in 2021 and 2022 but sadly were thwarted due to the continuing outbreak in 2021 and then Rita's Dad's illness and passing in 2022. However, we are finally back, ready to explore the rest of this amazing country.  We will spend our first two weeks back in Lagos as the Algarve has the best weather this time of year.  Our next stop will be 3 days in the resort town of Cascais, then onto the surfing capital of Nazare for 7 days, 3 days in the university town of Coimbra, 5 days in the port wine capital of Porto before heading to the capitol, Lisbon for 7 days.  Can't wait to finally get our Portugal adventure started again.
