Lagos to Praia da Luz Walk, March 02, 2023

 Another fine sunny day so we wanted to go for a long walk.  We decided to leave our house in old Lagos and walk to the beach resort town of Luz via the coastal cliffs.  We had done part of the walk a couple of days ago from the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse to just past Porto de Mos beach.  This walk would be a distance of 21km return so we knew it would take us most of the day to complete.  Rita had a very painful sciatica issue 5 weeks ago that had kept her from walking any distance without pain.  Today however, she completed the task without any physical issues.  It was a wonderful day out and another reason that we have really taken to Portugal. 


The trail along the cliffs goes from sea-level to 119 meters offers wonderful views of the ocean below/

The Rocha Negra (Black Rock) was created from volcanic action millions of years ago creating the black granite that carved its way through the more common Algarvian sandstone cliffs.

We stopped for very nice lunch at the Luz Beach Café and Bar that ended with cappuccino and the famous Portuguese tart  (pastel de nata) before heading back the way we came.  

Made it home and took a much needed shower and changed before Rita put together a very delicious Vongole dinner from local clams.  A tasty end to another wonderful day in the Algarve.

 Yesterday we took it easy and lazed around the apartment doing laundry, reading and caught up with emails before getting out in the afternoon and headed down to the waterfront to soak up the sun and people watch.  It was a very relaxing day.  Today we are heading out to Aveiro, which we read about in our travel book and it sounded like an interesting place to visit.  It's 76km south of Porto so it was a short drive to get there.  Aveiro is a popular tourist destination famed for its canals, art nouveau architecture and colorfully painted moliceiros boats.  The city lies at the edge of the Ria de Aveiro, a saltwater lagoon that was historically famed for its seaweed, salt and bountiful fish.  We toured the town for several hours and thoroughly enjoyed the experience as there was a huge flea market going on in the center of old town.  We had to get back to Porto as we had a reservation at Mind the Glass, a bistro specializing in Portuguese hot pots...

Geoff and Rita's Return to Portugal

Its been 2 years, 11months and 25 days since Rita and I made a hasty and early departure from our Portugal vacation due to the Corona Virus Pandemic.  We had tried to go back to finish our tour of Portugal in 2021 and 2022 but sadly were thwarted due to the continuing outbreak in 2021 and then Rita's Dad's illness and passing in 2022. However, we are finally back, ready to explore the rest of this amazing country.  We will spend our first two weeks back in Lagos as the Algarve has the best weather this time of year.  Our next stop will be 3 days in the resort town of Cascais, then onto the surfing capital of Nazare for 7 days, 3 days in the university town of Coimbra, 5 days in the port wine capital of Porto before heading to the capitol, Lisbon for 7 days.  Can't wait to finally get our Portugal adventure started again.

Rota da Laranja or Orange Tree Route

It was a windy and overcast day as we headed into the heart of the Algarve to explore several small towns but it cleared up in the afternoon and ended with a stunning sunset. Our first stop was Almancil, a totally undistinguished town except for Igreja Matriz de Sao Lourenco or Saint Lawrence Church in English.  It was built in 1730 in gratitude to Saint Lawrence who answered the towns desperate prayers for finding a water well.    The church's interior is a masterpiece of decoration in Portuguese glazed tiles known as "azulejos".  The blue and white tiles cover the entire interior of the church and depict the life of Saint Lawrence.  On our way to the next town we had to stop the car for a shepherd and his flock as they cross the road heading for another pasture.  A very rural experience.
