More Old Town Lagos

We woke up to another overcast day which kept us inside until the afternoon when the weather cleared.  Since our touring plans had changed, we took another long walk around old town.  Right next to our apartment are the fortified walls that still almost encircle old town.  There has been fortified walls around Lagos since Roman times and have been reinforced by the Arab and Christian occupation.  The walls we see today are from the 16th century that protected Lagos from raids by Corsairs, pirates and the Spanish.

The imposing Porta de Sao Concalo was the main access point to the old town.

The ocean side walls that remain still look very robust.  But most of these walls have been removed to allow better public access into the old town.

All the walls protecting the town from the land side are still standing.

The smell of blossoms from these orange trees was overwhelming as we strolled by this tiny square.

The Marcado Market has been here since 1924 and offers local seafood caught that morning

A vendor filleting a fish for a customer.  Sea Bass, Flounder, Snapper, Tuna, Sea Bream and Mackerel are some of the local catch.

One of many uniquely styled buildings inside old town.

Most of the streets are narrow and hilly.

A lot of very creative street art can be found around old town.  This portrait of an old local is next to a traditional fishing house that has been restored.

The cobbled streets of this beautiful town are very clean and free of garbage litter.

We ended the day enjoying a Neapolitan style pizza and a local red wine at Pepperino.
